Second-seeded and defending USA South Athletic Conference Tournament champion Averett took its first step towards a repeat title on Friday, defeating host Methodist 30-23, 30-25, 30-20 in the quarterfinals of the 2004 USA South Athletic Conference Tournament at the Riddle Center. Averett used a combination of strong blocking at the net and some alert defense to knock off the pesky Monarchs.

The Cougars cut off most Methodist scoring opportunities with 40 digs and recorded 13 blocks at the net.

Courtney Peters recorded 13 kills for Averett, while Christy Reneger had 11 kills and nine digs. Cassie Byrd added eight kills defensively and Jessica Hefner recorded seven digs. For Methodist, Rebecca Walter recorded 10 kills, followed by Stephanie Sullivan and Jennifer Ellis each with nine kills. Sullivan also recorded four service aces and 10 digs for the Monarchs.

Averett battles third-seeded Christopher Newport in the semifinals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
