March 2, 2007 VIRGINIA BEACH, VA- In the first day of the Atlantic versus East Challenge hosted by Virginia Wesleyan, the Monarchs came away with two wins, the biggest against defending National Champions, #2 Rutgers-Camden. The Monarchs move to 5-1 overall this season. Sophomore pitcher Lesley Hewitt went the distance against Rutgers-Camden in game one to pitch her first collegiate no-hitter with ten strikeouts. Junior Rebekah Kelly went 3-for-3 from the plate to include two doubles. Sophomore Sara Poling also went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Juniors Candace Hudgins and Kristen Kennedy both went 2-for-3 with one RBI a piece. The Monarchs finished with 12 hits in six innings of play. The Monarchs took on Oneonta State in game two defeating the Red Dragons 8-5. Freshman pitcher Emily Beck picked up the win allowing 5 hits in the game. Kelly went 3-for-4 from the plate with a home run, two runs scored and a RBI. Kennedy went 2-for-3 with a RBI and Poling went 3-for-5 with a RBI. Hudgins knocked in her eleventh career home run in the win. The Monarchs will finish out Atlantic vs. East Challenge on Sunday taking on Roanoke and Mary Washington. |
