#24 Methodist Picks Up Two Wins Over Averett
Sophomore Sara Poling bats 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The Monarchs only used five innings in each game to outscore the Averett Cougars 17-1 in the doubleheader on Sunday.  Methodist moves to 25-7 overall and 9-3 in the USA South while Averett drops to 8-19 overall and 3-9 in the conference.

In game one of the doubleheader, Methodist took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Junior Rebekah Kelly led off with a triple down the right field line.  Freshman Megan Hutson's groundout scored Kelly for the first run of the game.  Sophomore Kayla Talbert hit a RBI single to score sophomore Sara Poling.  Held scoreless in the second, the Monarchs came back to rattle off three runs in the bottom of the third inning.  It was Hutson's turn to lead off with a triple while senior Kristie Kennedy's double to center scored Hutson.  Junior Candace Hudgins singled to score Kennedy and freshman pinch runner Bethany Thurston scored on a single by junior Billye Rivas.  The Monarchs capped off the scoring with three runs in the fourth on four hits from Kerns, Kelly, Kennedy and freshman Crystal Metzger.  Senior Jessica Hutzul pitched five innings for the complete game to earn the win.

Sophomore Lesley Hewitt started in the circle for game two to hold the Cougars to two hits in four innings for the win.  The Monarchs scored a run in the first before knocking in four in both the second and third innings to take a 9-0 lead going into the fifth inning.  Averett scored their only run in the top of the fifth inning on two hits and a walk off of freshman Nicole Springer in relief.  Springer struck out the next batter and forced the final batter into a groundout to preserve the win.  The Monarchs' first run of the game came on a deep RBI double to right center for Poling to score Kennedy.  During the second inning, the Monarchs used six hits to score four runs including a RBI single by Kennedy.  Kelly hit a RBI single in the third to score freshman Cortney Kerns.  Hutson followed up with a double to move Kelly to third allowing Kennedy to hit a double down the left field line to score both runners. 

The Monarchs will will travel to Salem on Tuesday to play at 4 pm.
