Monarchs Split With Chowan
Kristie Kennedy's RBI single scores game-winning run in game one

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - In their first action since winning the conference tournament championship last weekend, the Monarchs split with Chowan 3-2 and 0-1.  The Monarchs move to 32-8 on the season while Chowan stands at 19-27-1.

During the first three innings of game one, both teams went scoreless before the Chowan Hawks got on the board in the top of the fourth.  Nichole Young led off with a triple deep in right field and Kaytee McLaughlin hit the single to left to score Young.  Katie Conlon reached on a fielder’s choice and went on to score the second run of the game on a RBI single by Terquita Funderburk.

The next two and a half innings went scoreless as the Monarchs stranded four runners through the first six.  The Hawks left two runners in the top of the seventh giving Methodist one final opportunity to take the lead.

Kayla Talbert led off the seventh with a single to left field.  Crystal Metzger came on to pinch run and advanced to third on a double back to the fence in left field by Candace Hudgins.  Colleen Delaney pinch ran for Hudgins and both runners advanced with Metzger scoring on the sacrifice fly by LaTiana Headen.  Jennifer Brophy singled to right center scoring Delaney for the game-tying run.  Megan Hutson’s bunt moved Brophy to second and Rebekah Kelly hit a double to center field, but the Hawks caught Brophy at home for the final out of the inning.

In the eighth inning, Chowan was unable to even move their runner with Kristie Kennedy making two grabs at third and pitcher Jessica Hutzul recording the final out on a pop-up.  Kelly was placed on second to start the bottom of the inning for Methodist and Cortney Kerns laid down the bunt to move Kelly to third.  Kennedy’s single up the middle scored Kelly for the winning run.

Jessica Hutzul pitched the complete game for the win on senior day.  Kate Roth who has been sidelined this season with injury was also able to play in right field during the first inning recording a sacrifice bunt in recognition of senior day.  Kennedy and Hudgins were also recognized in their final regular season home game.

The second game started similar to the first with both teams coming up empty through the first five innings.  McLaughlin led off the fifth with a single down the left field line and moved to second on Conlon’s single to left field.  Jenna Lassiter sacrificed both runners ahead to second and third and Funderburk’s ground out scored McLaughlin for the 1-0 lead.  The Monarchs got out of the inning without further damage but left two stranded in the bottom of the inning.

Lesley Hewitt entered to pitch for Emily Beck in the seventh inning to record the final three defensive outs.  Once again, the game would come down to the bottom of the seventh inning.  Headen got on base to start the inning, and had a chance to score on Kelly’s single but was called out at the plate giving Chowan the 1-0 win.
