#17 Monarchs Split with Christopher Newport
Sophomore Lesley Hewitt grabs second win with 8-2 victory

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The Methodist softball team opened conference play on the road Tuesday splitting a doubleheader at Christopher Newport.  The Monarchs dropped the first game 4-3 before defeating the Captains 8-2 in game two.  The Monarchs move to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the USA South while Christopher Newport moves to 5-1 this season and 3-1 in the conference.

Christopher Newport scored two runs early in the first inning of game one to take a two run lead.  The Monarchs had runners reach base in the second and third innings but couldn't score.  In the bottom of the third inning, the Captains took advantage of a triple to score their third run before scoring their fourth run in the bottom of the fifth on another triple. 

Down 4-0 in the top of the seventh, junior Candace Hudgins hit a double to left field and sophomore Caline Daun came on to pinch run.  With two outs, freshman Megan Hutson singled down the right field line to score Daun.  Junior Rebekah Kelly followed up with a triple to score Hutson.  Freshman Christina Poindexter doubled to center field to score the third and final run. 

The Monarchs came back in game two with a four run first inning.  Christopher Newport responded with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Monarchs maintained control with a run in the third and two more in the fourth.  The Captains scored again in the sixth, but the Monarchs still led 7-2.  In the top of the seventh the Captains walked freshman Virginia Harrington to start the inning and junior Kristie Kennedy and sophomore Sara Poling moved her around to third for sophomore Kayla Talbert to earn the RBI on a single down the right field line. 

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Captains had runners on second and third, but the Captains hit back to the circle for sophomore pitcher Lesley Hewitt to toss to first for the final out.  Hewitt pitched the entire game for the Monarchs earning her second win of the season.  The Monarchs knocked in three home runs in game two from Hudgins, Poling and Hutson.

The Monarchs will compete in the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
