#8 Monarchs Drop Two at Christopher Newport

Senior Rebekah Kelly hit 3-for-4 in game one for Methodist

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Christopher Newport jumped out to an early lead and went on to win both games of a doubleheader over the Monarchs on Sunday. Methodist made a late rally in the bottom of the seventh in game one but came up short 6-5 and then lost 3-1 in game two. The Monarchs move to 32-8 overall and 14-4 in the USA South while Christopher Newport is 28-8-1 overall and 13-3-1 in the conference.

Senior Rebekah Kelly led off the game with a single but it was the Captains who scored first with a run on two hits in the bottom of the first. A solo home run in the second gave Christopher Newport a 2-0 lead. Kelly responded with a home run of her own in the third, but the Captains came right back with another run in both the third and the fourth to lead 4-1. The Monarchs cut the lead to one with two runs in the sixth. Kelly led off by reaching on an error and moved to second on sophomore Megan Hutson's single to left field. Sophomore Crystal Metzger's groundout advanced both runners and Kelly and Hutson both scored on junior Kayla Talbert's single to right field. The Captains put together four hits in the bottom of the sixth to hold the 6-3 advantage. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Tabatha Stephenson kept the Monarchs alive with an infield single. Kelly singled to right moving Stephenson to third before she scored on a wild pitch. Kelly advanced to third on the play and Hutson drew the walk. Metzger hit the RBI single to left field for Kelly to move the Monarchs to within one run, but the Captains finished with a strikeout to hold on for the 6-5 win. Sophomore Emily Beck pitched four innings to take the loss while freshman Jennie Price went two innings of relief. Christopher Newport's Janet Fairchild earned the win in six innings.

Once again the Captains scored first in game two with an unearned run in the first inning. They added another run in the fourth inning after a lead-off walk, and a RBI double. Margit Severin hit a home run in the sixth to give Christopher Newport a 3-0 lead. Methodist freshman Jody Eyler led off the seventh with a walk and freshman Courtney Blann entered to pinch run for her. Talbert singled down the left field line and Blann moved to third. The Monarchs hit into a double play but Blann was able to score for the only Methodist run of the game. Junior Lesley Hewitt pitched the complete game for Methodist giving up just four hits for two earned runs. Lindsay Kelly and Kristen Rowe combined for the Captains to allow just three hits for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs finished the regular season with the #3 seed in the USA South Tournament. They will face #6 Ferrum on Friday at 11 am.
