April 14, 2007 BURLINGTON, N.C. - Second-seeded Methodist University will get two chances to defend its USA South Conference softball title after defeating Christopher Newport 9-5 Saturday afternoon in the winners bracket final. MU (30-7) will play CNU or Shenandoah for the 2007 championship. In either case, the Lady Monarchs will have to beaten twice in order to claim the title. Methodist's victory over Christopher Newport (30-7) was a see-saw affair - the Lady Captains saw Methodist score three runs in the top of the first before they tied it in the bottom of the frame. CNU took its first lead with a two-run third before MU retook the lead for good with three runs in the top of the fourth. In that rally, Methodist saw its first four batters reach base (the last on a bases-loaded walk) before Candice Hudgins drove in the winning run with a two-run single. Reliever Emily Beck, who came on in the middle of the third, scattered four hits over the final 4.1 innings to earn her 20th victory in 23 decisions this spring. Rebekah Kelly had four hits and Kristen Kennedy three RBI for the victors. Four different CNU players had two hits each. |
