Christopher Newport Defeats Methodist 8-4

BURLINGTON, N.C. - The Christopher Newport Captains stayed in the winner’s bracket of the 2008 USA South Tournament by downing Methodist, 8-4.

Methodist took the early lead, with Lesley Hewitt scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning, but that would be all of the offense they could muster.

Christopher Newport came back with three runs in the top of the third inning. The Captains had RBI-singles from Katie Moyers, Mary Kennedy, and Taylor Morgan.

The Captains added four runs in the fifth inning. Megan Morris got things started with a triple. Moyers knocked her in with an RBI-single. Margit Severin got on base with a double and Harper moved on base with a single. Thompson knocked them both in with a double.

In the sixth inning, the Captains added another run with an RBI-single by Morris after Ashley Mani reached on a triple.

Methodist didn’t give up, pushing 3 across in the bottom of the 7th with a double by Megan Hutson.

Christopher Newport will face the winner of Averett and Greensboro while Methodist will play Peace.
