March 17, 2007 FLORENCE, SC- Seven teams were scheduled to participate in the Early Bird Invitational on Friday and Saturday, but heavy rain on Friday forced the teams to compact as many games as possible into a busy Saturday. Methodist knocked off Averett, LaGrange, Huntingdon and Meredith in a combined score of 23-1. The Monarchs move to 15-5 overall and 2-1 in the USA South this season. The Monarchs defeated LaGrange College 2-0 in the first game of the day scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman pitcher Emily Beck went six innings only giving up four hits to hold the Panthers scoreless. Methodist knocked off USA South Conference opponent Averett University 10-0 with a strong win for senior pitcher Jessica Hutzul. The Monarchs won the rematch withHuntingdon in a 4-1 win. Sophomore Sara Poling hit a home run in the game while senior Kristie Kennedy notched a triple with sophomore pitcher Lesley Hewitt earning the win. In the final game of the day, the Monarchs defeated Meredith College 7-0. The Methodist offense was led by home runs from Poling and freshman Krista Dillard, while freshman Nicole Springer started in the circle to earn the win. The Monarchs will travel to North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday for a doubleheader at 2 pm.
