Monarchs sweep USA South rookie honors for softball for second straight week
Headen selected USA South Rookie of the Week; Hewitt tabbed USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The USA South Athletic Conference released its second weekly honors for softball on Monday, and the Methodist Monarchs swept the rookie awards for the second straight week. The Monarchs’ LaTiana Headen was selected USA South Rookie of the Week, while teammate Lesley Hewitt was selected USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Week. Both players were previously honored last week.

A freshman from Mebane, N.C., Headen is on a tear offensively in the Monarchs’ first eight games of the season. She hit .667 (8-for-12) over the weekend at the Atlantic vs. East Challenge at Virginia Wesleyan. Her big game was a 2-for-4 performance on Saturday with two home runs and six RBIs in Methodist’s 13-1 victory over Mary Washington. In addition, Headen also went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs against Albright and 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored against Polytechnic.

A freshman from Garner, N.C., Hewitt improved to 2-0 on the season when the Monarchs downed Albright 10-1 on Saturday. Hewitt worked five innings, allowing only three hits and one run with no walks and four strikeouts.

27th-ranked Methodist plays this week in the prestigious Sun West Tournament in Orange, Calif.
