Since head coach Ron Simpson took over the reins of the Methodist University softball team for the 1999 season, the Monarchs have emerged as one of the Atlantic region's elite NCAA Division III programs. The Monarchs have captured four Dixie Intercollegiate/USA South Athletic Conference regular-season titles, five DIAC/USA South Tournament Championships and four bids to NCAA post-season play.

In 2000, the Monarchs finished third in the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional, and followed that with a runner-up finish against Emory in 2003. The 2006 season marked one of the best seasons in the history of fast-pitch softball at Methodist as the Monarchs posted the best record in program history (39-6), set a school record for victories in a season.

Methodist has posted a 322-124-1 mark under Simpson's leadership, including a span of 10 consecutive 25-win seasons. During that time, the Monarchs have placed 60 players on the All-Conference teams, seven conference Player of the Year honors, four conference Coach of the Year honors, seven conference Rookie of the Year honors, and five NCAA Division III All-Americans in softball.

The Monarchs play on one of the South's finest softball facilities, Monarch Field. Monarch Field has a top-notch playing surface surrounded by covered dugouts, batting cages, bullpens, press box, and a seating capacity of 400.
