Methodist Earns 1-0 Win Over LaGrange
Kristie Kennedy's home run in the bottom of the sixth proves to be game-winner

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Monarchs started things out right on Thursday with a 1-0 win over LaGrange in the NCAA First Round Tournament.  It turned out to be a battle of the pitchers as Methodist pitcher threw a 5-hit shutout for the win.  LaGrange's Amanda Daniel gave up just one run in six hits on a deep centerfield shot by Kristie Kennedy.

Kim Woodard connected for the first hit of the game in the top of the first for LaGrange, but the Monarchs got out of the inning unharmed.  Daniel held the Monarchs hitless through the first, but Kayla Talbert drove one to right center to get things started.  Pinch runner Caline Daun advanced to second on LaTiana Headen's sacrifice bunt and moved to third on Billye Rivas' single, but could not score as the both teams remained scoreless.

Kristie Kennedy led off the bottom of the sixth inning breaking the tie with her home run to center.  Sara Poling followed up with a single and moved to second on Talbert's sacrifice bunt, but was stranded at the end of the inning.

The 1-0 lead would be all they needed as the Monarchs held off a late two-hit rally by the Panthers to preserve the shutout.

With the win, the Monarchs advanced to play Emory on Friday at 2 pm.
