Cornelius and Talbert tabbed Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the Year
Baseball and Softball student-athletes receive highest scholastic honor
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.- Methodist College Baseball and Softball programs both produced USA South Conference Championships this spring.  They also both produced Methodist College's top scholastic student-athletes in Steve Cornelius and Kayla Talbert.  The duo claimed the honor of 2005-06 Methodist College Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, as announced today by Methodist athletics director Bob McEvoy. release

Record setting season ends at NCAA Regionals
Monarchs fall 5-0 to Moravian; 39 wins is most in school history
SALISBURY, MD-  The Methodist College softball team had their magical season stymied on Saturday by Moravian College senior pitcher Meagan Hennessy.  The Monarchs managed only two hits and fell 5-0.  The loss concludes the Monarchs season at 39-8; the most wins in the history of Methodist College. release

Monarchs fall to Ramapo in NCAA Tournament
Lisa Jackson leads with two hits; Methodist to play at 2 pm
SALISBURY, MD-  The Methodist College softball team fell to Ramapo College 3-0 in the championship of the winners bracket in the 2006 NCAA Division III Regional Tournament.  With the loss the Monarchs fall to 39-7 overall, while the Roadrunners raise their overall record to 35-11. release

Monarchs cruise past Kings 10-1 in NCAA's
Sorenson picks up seventeenth victory; Hudgins hits home run

SALISBURY, MD-  Top seeded Methodist College (39-6) had little trouble in their opening round of NCAA regional play, handling Kings College (37-8) 10-1 in five innings.  With the win the Monarchs advance to the semi-finals at 10 am on Saturday morning. release

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The NCAA announced Sunday night the championship field for this years division III softball championship.  Methodist, currently ranked #9 in the nation, will compete as one of the eight #1 seeds in the eight regional tournaments set to begin on Thursday. release

Twelve Methodist athletes named to all-tournament teams
Jessica Hutzul named softball MVP; Adam Horton men's golf medalist

BURLINGTON, NC-  Twelve Methodist athletes earned recognition on USA South All-Tournament teams this past weekend at the Spring Sports Festival in Burlington, NC.  Adam Horton led his golf team to the Conference title shooting a 145 winning the medalist honors.  Pitcher Jessica Hutzul led the 38-6 Monarchs to the Tournament championship and was named the Most Valuable Player. release

Methodist competes for six tournament championships in first ever Spring Sports Festival

Methodist College's Jennifer Sorensen has been named the Pitcher of the Year while teammate Lesley Hewitt has been named the Rookie Pitcher of the Year. Monarchs claim conference championship with wins over Ferrum

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist College softball team defended their 2005 USA South conference championship by defeating Ferrum College 8-2, 8-4 on Sunday.  With the wins the Monarchs end their regular season at an impressive 34-6 and 13-1 in USA South play. release

Seniors go out in style- Monarchs handle Salem
Methodist scores 30 in game one; Hutzul throws a no-hitter in game two
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – On senior day at Monarch Field the six current Methodist College's seniors did what they do best- win.  The winningest senior class in school history led Methodist (32-6) over an overmatched Salem College (0-29).  Methodist starters pounded Salem 30-1 in the first game before cruising to a 8-0 victory in the nightcap. release

Sorensen fires three-hit shutout as Methodist wins first game 2-0
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The chances of an undefeated season in the USA South Athletic Conference went by the wayside for the Methodist Monarch softball team on Wednesday against visiting North Carolina Wesleyan. The Monarchs, behind a sterling performance by Jennifer Sorensen, won game one 2-0. However, North Carolina Wesleyan rallied to take the nightcap 4-3 at the Monarch Field. The split makes Methodist, ranked 27th in Division III, 24-6 overall and 7-1 in the USA South. release

27th-ranked Monarchs sweep two at Early Bird Invitational
Sorensen fires no-hitter against Peace; Jackson comes up big against LaGrange
FLORENCE, S.C. – The Methodist Monarch softball team finished off the Early Bird Invitational with fine fashion on Saturday. Methodist opened with 2-0 victory over Peace on a no-hitter by Jennifer Sorensen, and then out-lasted LaGrange 3-1 in nine innings in the nightcap. The victories gave Methodist four in the five games at the Early Bird Invitational this weekend. Methodist, ranked 27th in Division III, improves to 23-5 overall. release

Methodist knocks off Meredith, Averett to improve to 21-5 overall
FLORENCE, S.C. – After a one-year hiatus, the Early Bird Invitational returned on Friday, and the Methodist Monarch softball team won two of its three games in pool play. Methodist opened with a tough 4-2 defeat against Huntingdon, but rallied to defeat Meredith 3-1 and Averett 4-2. With the two victories, 27th-ranked Methodist improves to 21-5 overall. release

Kennedy goes 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Methodist
FAYETTEILLE, N.C. – The Methodist Monarch women’s softball team warmed up for this weekend’s Early Bird Tournament on Thursday with a 6-1 victory over visiting Staten Island at Monarch Field. The victory was the fifth straight for 27th-ranked Methodist, which improves to 19-4 overall. Kristen Kennedy paced Methodist offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. release

Headen homers in game one, Acosta has four hits in nightcap
DANVILLE, Va. – Pulling out the offensive fireworks on Wednesday, the Methodist Monarch softball team recorded yet another sweep in USA South Athletic Conference play with a 5-1, 9-2 twin-killing at rival Averett. The victory was the fourth straight for the 27th-ranked Monarchs, which remain undefeated in the USA South at 6-0. Methodist had a combined 26 hits in the doubleheader, including 17 in game two against Cougar pitching. release

Methodist improves to 16-4 overall and 4-0 in USA South
GREENSBORO, N.C. – With the week of California Dreamin’ now a memory, the Methodist Monarch softball team returned to the friendly confines of Monarch Field on Monday and swept USA South Athletic Conference rival Shenandoah 6-0 and 10-1. The sweep improves 27th-ranked Methodist to 16-4 overall and 4-0 in the USA South. In addition, Methodist has now won 26 straight games head-to-head against Shenandoah. release

Methodist falls to 14-4 overall with defeats against Kenyon, Central
ORANGE, Calif. – The final day of the Sun West Tournament wasn’t what the Methodist Monarch softball team envisioned as it ended the tournament with two straight defeats. The Monarchs dropped a 6-3 decision against Kenyon in the first game, followed by an 8-0 shutout defeat against Central in the nightcap. The sweep drops 27th-ranked Methodist to 14-4 overall. release

ORANGE, Calif. – The for the second straight day, the 27th-ranked Methodist Monarch softball team recorded a sweep at the prestigious Sun West Tournament. On Friday, the Monarchs pulled off a 3-2 thriller over Central in eight innings, followed by a 5-2 victory over Harris-Stowe in the nightcap. ORANGE, Calif. – After splitting their first four games at the Sun West Tournament, the Methodist Monarch softball team recorded a two-game sweep on Thursday. The Monarchs opened with a 5-0 shutout victory over New York Tech, followed by a 4-2 victory over DeSales. Methodist, the 27th-ranked team in Division III, improves to 12-2 overall. release

ORANGE, Calif. – For the second straight day, the 27th-ranked Methodist Monarch softball team recorded a two-game split at the prestigious Sun West Tournament. The Monarchs opened with a 9-0 rout over DeSales in their first game on Tuesday, but then dropped a 2-0 pitcher’s duel against third-ranked Chapman in the nightcap.

ORANGE, Calif. – The 27th-ranked Methodist Monarch softball team opened play in the prestigious Sun West Tournament on Monday with a split in its first two games. The Monarchs dropped their first game in eight innings, 6-5 against NCAA Division I Pennsylvania from the Ivy League, but rebounded to win their second game against Lake Erie 3-2. Methodist is now 9-1 overall on the season. release

The Monarchs’ LaTiana Headen was selected USA South Rookie of the Week, while teammate Lesley Hewitt was selected USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Week. Monarchs remain undefeated with routs over Mary Washington, Albright
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The 27th-ranked Methodist Monarch softball team finished up the Atlantic vs. East Challenge with two convincing victories on Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan. Methodist started with a 13-1 rout over Mary Washington, followed by a 10-1 rout over Albright. The Monarchs remain undefeated at 8-0 on the season heading into next week’s prestigious Sun West Tournament in Santa Anna, Calif. In addition, the sweep gave veteran head coach Ron Simpson his 225th victory at Methodist in this his eighth season. In their four games in the Atlantic vs. East Challenge, Methodist scored a whopping 33 runs and gave up only two. release

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The 27th-ranked Methodist Monarch softball team got off to a strong start on Friday at the prestigious Atlantic vs. East Challenge at Virginia Wesleyan. The Monarchs won their first two games on Friday with a 2-0 victory over Lycoming and an 8-0 shutout over Polytechnic. The victory keeps Methodist undefeated at 6-0 overall. The Atlantic vs. East Challenge is a 24-team field, including five nationally-ranked teams. release

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After checking in at 27th in the first Division III national poll of the season, the Methodist Monarch softball team opened the season in fine fashion with a 12-0, 10-2 doubleheader sweep at Guilford on Wednesday. Jennifer Sorensen and Jessica Hutzul combined for a one-hitter in game one, while Lesley Hewitt pitched three scoreless innings in game two to get the victory. release

Methodist picked first in USA South preseason softball poll
Monarchs open 2006 season on Feb. 22 at Guilford
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The USA South Athletic Conference released its 2006 preseason poll for softball on Wednesday, and the Methodist Monarchs were selected as the preseason favorite in the eight-team race. Methodist received 48 points and six first-place votes, out-distancing second place Christopher Newport with 38 points and one first-place vote. Methodist opens its 2006 season on Feb. 22 at Guilford. release
