March 9, 2007 PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL- The Monarchs started the NFCA Leadoff Classic off on the right foot with wins over Mt. Union and Webster. The Monarchs move to 9-3 overall this season going into day two of the classic. Methodist started off with Mt. Union College in the first game of the day. The Monarchs scored first in the bottom of the third on a RBI single by sophomore Sara Poling, but the Raiders tied the game in the fourth and took a 6-1 lead in the fifth inning. Sophomore Kayla Talbert's RBI single in the sixth scored senior Kristie Kennedy in the sixth, but the Monarchs were still down 6-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Methodist came back to tie the game with four runs on three hits and three Raider errors to send the game into the eighth inning. Sophomore pitcher Lesley Hewitt helped get the Monarchs out of the top of the eighth inning to give the team another opportunity in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Tina Poindexter started on second and a hit by junior Rebekah Kelly allowed Poindexter to advance. When Poindexter got caught in a rundown, the Raider's error allowed Poindexter to score the game-winning run. In the second game, the Monarchs defeated Webster 5-2. Webster scored both of their runs in the bottom of the third inning, but the Monarchs came back and scored one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-2 lead. They capped off the scoring with two runs in the seventh to earn the 7-2 win. Junior Billye Rivas home run to centerfield tied the game in the fifth inning. Tomorrow the Monarchs will face Rutgers-Camden at 12:30 before continuing in bracket play. Stay up to date with the NFCA Leadoff Classic on the official tournament website. |
