March 10, 2007 PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL- The Monarchs finished pool play with a 5-2 win over defending national champion Rutgers-Camden for the second win in a week over the #15 team in the country. With the win, the Monarchs moved into the Gold Bracket of play as the #4 seed, but lost 9-1 to two-time national champion and last season's runner-up, the University of St. Thomas (Minn.). The Monarchs move to 10-3 overall this season. On Saturday afternoon, Methodist took on Rutgers-Camden in a rematch from the Atlantic-East Challenge last weekend where sophomore pitcher Lesley Hewitt threw a no-hitter in the 8-0 win. Freshman pitcher Emily Beck earned the start in the circle today and held the Raptors scoreless through six innings only allowing two hits. The Monarchs scored first when they strung together five hits in the fourth inning to score three runs. Their momentum continued when they capitalized on Raptors' errors to take the 5-0 lead. Rutgers scored two in the seventh on a home run and RBI double, but the Monarchs held on for the 5-2 win. In game two of the day, Methodist took on St. Thomas, but a six-run third inning for the Tommies put the game out of reach for the Monarchs. Errors proved costly as the Monarchs made three errors to boost the Tommies' three hits for the six runs. St. Thomas scored two additional runs in the fourth inning before the Monarchs prevented the shutout with their own run sparked by junior Billye Rivas' single. Freshman Krista Dillard came on to pinch run and scored the Monarchs' only run of the game. St. Thomas finished the 9-1 win with a run in the sixth inning. Freshman Megan Hutson went 2-for-3 against Rutgers-Camden while senior Kristie Kennedy finished 2-for-7 on the day with 2 RBI. Tomorrow the Monarchs will face Mt. Union at 8:30 am in bracket play.
