#23 Methodist Finishes 4-2 at NFCA Classic
Monarchs lose in extra innings to Mt. Union but finishes with 5-0 win over Wheaton

PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL-  The Methodist softball team lost a heartbreaker Sunday morning to Mt. Union with a 4-3 defeat in the ninth inning, but bounced back with a 5-0 win over Wheaton (Mass.) to finish 4-2 at the tournament.  The Monarchs move to 11-5 overall this season.

In the first game of the day, the Monarchs took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by sophomore Sara Poling.  Mt. Union countered with a home run in the third, and tied the game in the sixth on a RBI single by All-American Erin Duignan.  With both teams scoreless in the seventh, the game went to extra innings.  Sophomore Kayla Talbert hit a RBI single to score junior Rebekah Kelly in the top of the inning, but Mt. Union responded with a tying run in the bottom of the eighth.

The Monarchs left a runner stranded on third in the top of the ninth before the Raiders scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning.  The 4-3 loss sent the Monarchs to a consolation game in the gold bracket.

Methodist took on Wheaton in game two of the day and took care of business with the 5-0 win.  Senior Jessica Hutzul pitched the first four innings to earn the win for the Monarchs.  Senior Kristie Kennedy hit a RBI single to centerfield to score pinch runner Colleen Delaney and junior Rebekah Kelly.  Methodist extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning when Kelly led off with a single.  Poling's single scored Kelly and pinch runner Caline Daun scored on a Mt. Union error.  Kelly finished the scoring for the Monarchs when she scored on Kennedy's single in the seventh.

The Monarchs will host the Early Bird Tournament in Florence, South Carolina on Friday and Saturday.
