May 12, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Monarchs were hoping to jump start their offense Saturday morning to prevent elimination from the NCAA Softball First Round Tournament, but Marietta scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning to prevail 2-1. The Monarchs finish their season 33-10 while Marietta moves to 34-11. Methodist pitcher Lesley Hewitt used a strikeout and two fly outs to hold the Pioneers hitless in the top of the first. Rebekah Kelly led off for the Monarchs with a single up the middle, but was stranded on third. Marietta's Lindsey Romick led off the top of the second with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt but Hewitt struck out the next two batters to prevent the run. With two outs in the top of the third, Brandy Jacob reached second on an error and Emily McComb followed up with a double to score Jacobs giving Marietta a 1-0 lead. The Monarchs had two base runners in the bottom of the fourth with singles by Kristie Kennedy and Kayla Talbert, but couldn't score. In the bottom of the fifth, Methodist had two outs when Megan Hutson singled through the left side. Kelly came through with a huge double in the left field corner to score Hutson before being called out at third to end the inning. With the score tied at one heading into the sixth, Methodist pitcher Emily Beck entered in relief. Marietta responded with two hits and two sacrifices to score what would be the game-winning run. The Monarchs finish their season as USA South Tournament Champions ranked as high as number 17 in the country. |
