#9 Methodist Sweeps Mary Baldwin 17-0, 13-4

Ninth ranked team picks up 30th win of the season

STAUNTON, VA - The Monarchs took on Mary Baldwin Saturday to pick up two wins in 10 innings of work. Methodist cruised to 17-0 and 13-4 wins over the Squirrels. The Monarchs move to 30-4 overall and 12-0 in the USA South while Mary Baldwin drops to 3-26 overall and 0-12 in the conference.

In the first inning of game one the Monarchs got on the board with a string of hits from senior Rebekah Kelly, sophomore Megan Hutson and junior Kayla Talbert. The Mary Baldwin defense helped out with three errors for the Monarchs to go on to score two runs. Freshman Ashley Guman led off the second with a single. Three more hits and the Monarchs scored four more runs to take the 6-0 lead. Six additional runs in the third and Methodist went ahead 12-0 led by a two-run home run from junior Caline Daun. They went on to score two runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth to secure the 17-0 win in five innings. Kelly, Hutson, Talbert, Daun and Guman each had two hits in the game with Poling leading the team with three RBI. Junior Lesley Hewitt pitched the first three innings for the win while Jennie Price finished the final two innings with each pitcher giving up just one hit a piece.

The Fighting Squirrels started game two retiring the first three Methodist batters but the Monarchs battled through the second inning with eight runs on five hits capped off by a two-run home run from freshman Jody Eyler. Methodist scored two runs in the third after hits from sophomores Virginia Harrington and Bethany Thurston. Mary Baldwin tallied two runs in the bottom of the third inning, but the Monarchs rebounded in the fourth inning with three runs on two hits with three errors from Mary Baldwin. The Squirrels tallied two runs in the bottom of the fifth but it was not enough as Methodist took the 13-4 win. Sophomore Kim Bartlett and Harrington both finished 2-for-2 on the day with Harrington registering three RBI. Freshman Courtney Blann went three and a third in the circle for the win while sophomore Emily Beck and freshman Hannah Stutts combined in relief.

The Monarchs will finish their weekend road trip at Shenandoah on Sunday at 12 pm.
