March 21, 2007 ROCKY MOUNT, NC- The North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops entered Wednesday's doubleheader undefeated in the USA South, but the Monarchs took both games 6-5 and 8-0 to knock the Bishops out of first place. The Monarchs improve to 17-5 overall and 3-1 in the USA South while NC Wesleyan falls to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Freshman pitcher Emily Beck started in game one for Methodist pitching the first five innings. The Monarchs scored four runs in the second inning, and a run in the third and sixth to take the win. Junior Rebekah Kelly went 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI while sophomore LaTiana Headen went 2-for-4 with a triple and a RBI. Freshman Megan Hutson went 2-for-3 while junior Candace Hudgin and sophomore Kayla Talbert had a RBI a piece. Sophomore Lesley Hewitt pitched the sixth inning for the Monarchs before Beck came back in to finish things off in the seventh inning. The Monarchs took control early in game two with a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Methodist scored four runs in the third and capped it off with a run in the fourth to finish the game in five innings. Hewitt went four innings to earn the win while senior Jessica Hutzul came in to close the game in the fifth. The Monarchs held Wesleyan to only two hits and a walk in five innings. Hudgins went 3-for-3 with a big double off the fence and two RBI. Hutson batted 1-for-2 with two runs scored while Talbert hit a double with a RBI. The Monarchs will host Peace on Saturday at 1 pm in a USA South doubleheader. |
