Seniors go out in style- Monarchs handle Salem
Methodist scores 30 in game one; Hutzul throws a no-hitter in game two

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – On senior day at Monarch Field the six current Methodist College's seniors did what they do best- win.  The winningest senior class in school history led Methodist (32-6) over an overmatched Salem College (0-29).  Methodist starters pounded Salem 30-1 in the first game before cruising to a 8-0 victory in the nightcap.

Pre-game ceremonies celebrated the careers of Adrienne Acosta, Amy Faucette, Kristen Kennedy, Caryn Moreland, Jernnifer Sorenson, and Krystal Harris.  The ensuing games celebrated the success of the Monarch softball program.

Methodist jumped out to a 27-0 lead after just two innings in the first game.  Monarch hitters pounded out 23 hits in those two innings, scoring ten times in the first and 17 more times in the second.

Starting pitcher Mara Brown pitched three perfect innings to record the win.  Salem's first base runner and only run came in their last inning when Tatum Fishel hit safely and eventually scored off Monarch reliever Jennifer Brophy.

Ten Monarchs recorded hits in the first game and 17 of the 25 hits came from the senior class.  Adrienne Acosta went 4-4, Amy Faucette 3-3 with 5 RBI, Caryn Moreland 3-4 with 5 RBI, Kristen Kennedy 3-4, Jennifer Soreson 3-5, and Krystal Harris went 1-4.  Kate Roth also had a big day at the plate going 4-5 with 4 RBI.

In game two, the Monarch bats were not quite so hot, but Jessica Hutzul didn't need much help.  Hutzel dominated Salem hitters throwing a no-hitter in the 5-inning game.  Hutzell's only mistake was a 4th inning walk to Kristen Baum.  She struck out eight of the sixteen batters she faced.

Caline Daun also came up big for the Monarchs.  Daun was 3-3 with two RBI and made a spectacular play on a ground ball to second base to end Salem's fifth and preserve Hutzul's no-hitter.

Methodist travels to Ferrum for a doubleheader on Sunday.  They need just one win to capture their second straight USA South regular season championship.
