Monarchs Defeat Shenandoah in Doubleheader 4-0 and 10-9
Junior Rebekah Kelly hits 5-for-9 with 3 runs scored and four RBI with game-winning triple

WINCHESTER, VA-  The Monarchs traveled to Shenandoah on Tuesday to face the Hornets in a USA South doubleheader.  Methodist shut out the Hornets in game one 4-0 before winning 10-9 in the ninth inning of game two. The Monarchs move to 22-6 overall and 6-2 in the USA South while Shenandoah falls to 10-12 this season and 4-6 in the conference.

Methodist was held scoreless in game one until the fifth inning when frehsman Nicole Springer led off with a single to left field.  Sophomore Jennifer Brophy laid down the sacrifice bunt to move pinch runner freshman Bethany Thurston to second and junior Rebekah Kelly singled to center to score Thurston for the first run of the game.  In the sixth inning sophomore Sara Poling scored after reaching base on a walk.  Shenandoah had a runner on third in the sixth, but Methodist pitcher sophomore Lesley Hewitt forced the next patter into a pop up to second baseman Megan Hutson for the third out.  The Monarchs came back out and scored two runs in the seventh on a two-run home run by Kelly.  Hewitt earned the win in the complete game shutout.

In game two, Methodist held a 9-4 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning before the Hornets came out and scored three to move within two runs.  In the bottom of the fifth inning, Shenandoah scored another run before the game was put on hold for a rain delay.  Play resumed and the Hornets finished the inning with the tying run to even the score at nine.  The sixth and seventh innings went scoreless to send the game into extra innings.  Neither team could score during the eighth.  Springer led off for the Monarchs in the ninth to reach on a fielder's choice.  Freshman Emily Gleason entered to run for Springer and Brophy sacrificed Gleason to second to set the stage for Kelly's RBI triple to score Gleason and take the 10-9 lead.  Hewitt who entered in the fifth inning held Shenandoah scoreless in the bottom of the inning to earn her second win of the day.

The Monarchs will face the Averett Cougars on Thursday at home at 2:30 pm.
