#9 Methodist Splits With Shenandoah

Sophomore Crystal Metzger hit 4-for-6 on the day with two RBI

WINCHESTER, VA - Shenandoah came from behind in game one to win 7-4 and break the Monarchs' 21 game winning streak. Methodist came back in game two with an 8-2 win. The Monarchs move to 31-5 overall and 13-1 in the USA South while Shenandoah is 22-8 overall and 10-2 in the conference.

The Monarchs got on the board first in game one after sophomore Crystal Metzger reached on a two-out walk and freshman Jody Eyler tripled to send Metzger home. Shenandoah came back and scored in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at one. The Hornets took a 2-1 lead in the third inning after two hits and another sacrifice fly. In the top of the fourth, junior Kayla Talbert singled through the left side and freshman Brittany Melton sacrificed her to second. Talbert moved to third on junior Jennifer Brophy's ground out and scored on freshman Ashley Guman's single right field to tie the game at two. Sophomore Megan Hutson hit a triple in the fifth and scored on Metzger's single for the 3-2 lead, but the Hornets came right back and tied the game in the bottom of the inning on two doubles. Junior Sara Poling led off the sixth with a double and Brophy sacrificed her to third. Poling scored the Monarchs' fourth run on a RBI single from freshman Tabatha Stephenson. With a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Monarchs needed just three outs. Shenandoah responded with the tying run on a RBI double. After an intentional walk, the Hornets' Lauren Wall hit a three-run home run to end the game with the 7-4 win. Junior Lesley Hewitt took the loss for Methodist while Katie Haskins earned the win for Shenandoah.

Methodist came right back at the Hornets with two runs in the first inning of game two. Talbert hit a RBI single to score senior Rebekah Kelly and Metzger scored on a wild pitch for the 2-0 lead. The Monarchs added a third run in the second inning after a RBI single from Kelly to score Guman. In the third inning, Metzger led off with a single and Eyler hit her second triple of the day to score Metzger. Talbert hit a sacrifice fly for Eyler to score. Methodist scored two runs in the fourth on a RBI single from Metzger and a sacrifice fly from Eyler to take the 7-0 lead. An insurance run came in the top of the seventh after freshman Darci Martin scored on freshman Brandi Chandler's steal. The Hornets put together another bottom of the seventh rally, but Methodist got out of the inning allowing just two runs to take the 8-2 win. Sophomore Emily Beck earned the complete game win allowing just one earned run and scattering six hits.

The Monarchs will host N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday at 2:30 pm in their final regular season home series. Seniors Rebekah Kelly and Billye Rivas will be recognized before the game and the U.S. Army Parachute Team, the Golden Knights are scheduled to perform at 1:45 pm.
