March 1, 2008 VIRGINIA BEACH, VA- The Methodist University softball started spring break at the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on Friday with two losses to #6 Moravian and #4 Louisiana College. Methodist moves to 2-2 this season. In game one against Moravian, both teams were scoreless through the first three innings. Moravian started the scoring in the top of the fourth inning with two runs on three hits. Methodist responded with a run in the fourth when junior Sara Poling led off with a single down the left field line. Sophomore Bethany Thurston entered for Poling to pinch run and moved to second on junior Kayla Talbert's sacrifice bunt. Freshman Hannah Stutts singled to center before freshman Darci Martin singled down the left field line to score Thurston. Moravian added an insurance run in the fifth, while the Monarchs could not get another hit. Moravian finished with the 3-1 win. Methodist sophomore Emily Beck pitched the complete game for the Monarchs giving up six hits with two earned runs. Methodist looked to rebound against Louisiana College, but Louisiana struck first with a run in the third inning. The Monarchs scored two runs in the fifth inning when Talbert and Stutts reached on walks. Freshman Brandi Chandler entered for Stutts as a pinch runner and a two RBI double from freshman Kayla McLean scored both runners. Methodist had runners on second and third but Louisiana recorded the two final outs of the inning. Louisiana tied the tied the game in the fifth on a RBI from Clement. A Methodist error allowed another run to score for Louisiana to take a 3-2 lead. Louisiana then hit a triple and scored on a passed ball to earn the 4-2 win. Junior Lesley Hewitt pitched the complete game for Methodist allowing five hits on two earned runs. The Monarchs are scheduled to play two more games at Virginia Wesleyan before traveling to Florida this week.
