Monarchs place fourth, Lady Monarchs ninth at Carolinas Championship

PEMBROKE, N.C. –
The Methodist Monarch men’s track and field team garnered a fourth-place finish, while the Lady Monarchs finished ninth on Saturday at the 13th annual Carolinas Championships at UNC-Pembroke. Methodist garnered 70 points in the men’s competition, and 14 points in the women’s meet.

Anthony Trofe won the men’s hammer throw with a distance of 47.68 meters, while Nevin Rayford finished second in the men’s long jump with a distance of 6.89 meters. That distance made Rayford a provisional qualifier for next month’s NCAA Division III National Championships. In addition, Rayford also placed third in the men’s triple jump with a distance of 13.04 meters.

Methodist had strong representation in the men’s shot put as Kenny Brown placed second (13.49m), DeVonne Armstrong in third (13.36m) and David Leonard in sixth (12.47m). Armstrong also placed third in the men’s hammer (42.29m) and fourth in the men’s discus (40.41m). The Monarchs also got a fourth-place finish from Darmarcus Wilson in the men’s javelin (47.61m).

In addition, Jeremy McSwain (11.42 seconds) and Taz Petty (11.46 seconds) placed sixth and seventh in the men’s 100-meter dash, while Mike Hill placed seventh in the men’s 200-meter dash (23.07 seconds) and sixth in the men’s long jump (6.69m).

For the Lady Monarchs, Chemier Buford placed second in the women’s hammer throw with a distance of 37.65 meters, and seventh in women’s shot put with a throw of 11.05 meters. Meg Coe placed third in the shot put with a throw of 11.72 meters.

Methodist’s next meet is the prestigious Penn Relays on April 28-30 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
