Monarchs finish sixth, Lady Monarchs place ninth at Emory Classic

ATLANTA, Ga. – Battling both a tough meet field and the elements, the Methodist Monarch men’s track and field team placed sixth on Saturday at the Emory Classic, while the Methodist Lady Monarch women’s track and field team placed ninth.

The Monarchs scored 45 points in the 18-team meet, five points ahead of Clark-Atlanta and Kennesaw State and seven points ahead of Clayton State. Cedarville won the men’s championship with 114.5 points. The Lady Monarchs scored 21 points in the 19-team women’s field, as Cedarville was the overall champion with 125 points.

Highlighting the Monarchs was DeVonne Armstrong, who placed second in the men’s shot put with a throw of 47-11 feet and third in the men’s discus with a toss of 130-10 feet, while David Leonard placed fifth in the men’s shot put with a throw of 43-5.25 feet. Nevin Rayford placed fifth in the men’s triple jump with a distance of 43-05 feet, and seventh in the men’s long jump with a distance of 20-09.25 feet.

In addition, the men’s 4x100-meter relay team of Adonis Stanley, Mike Hill, Howard Fuller and Taz Petty finished third in 43.42 seconds.

The next meet for Methodist is Chanticlear Classic on April 9 at Coastal Carolina.
