Crystal Williams promoted
to track and field head coach
Former track and field assistant will also
serve as the cross country assistant coach
FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Crystal Williams, who
previously served as the track and field
assistant coach has been promoted to the head
coach of the Methodist track and field program,
Athletics Director Bob McEvoy announced
Thursday. She will also serve as the
assistant coach for the men's and women's cross
country programs.

Patrick Thornell wins the javelin, places
second in the high jump
ATLANTA, GA- The Methodist Track and Field team
travel to Atlanta on Saturday to compete in the
Emory Inviational. The event was the
second event of the 2006 outdoor season.
Pat Thornell won the Javelin throw with a toss
of 54.56 meters. He also placed second in
the high jump with a mark of 6'2 3/4.
Darby Kawesi also placed for the Monarchs
running a 11.41 in the Men's 100 meter dash;
good enough for a seventh place finish.

Methodist opens 2006 outdoor season
with solid performances at Seahawk Invitational

each produce Top 10 individual finishes
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The 2006 outdoor track and
field season opened on a solid note on Saturday
for the Methodist men’s and women’s track and
field teams as they both participated in the
Seahawk Invitational at UNC-Wilmington. Overall,
there were three individual Top 10 finishes. On
the men’s side, Todd Sackewitz placed sixth in
the pole vault with a height of 4.15 meters,
while Kawesi Darby placed seventh in the men’s
100-meter dash in a time of 11.33 seconds. For
the Lady Monarchs, Tia Imel placed seventh in
the women’s 400-meter dash in 1:06.27 minutes.

BLACKSBURG, Va. –
The 2006
indoor track and field season concluded on
Saturday for the Methodist Monarch men’s track
and field team at the Virginia Tech Last Chance
Invitational. The Monarchs had two athletes
competing for possible NCAA Division III
championship opportunities. Although neither
qualified for nationals, they both had personal
best times in respected events.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Methodist Monarch men’s
track and field team made the most of a small
lineup at the Mason-Dixon Conference Indoor
Championships on Sunday at Christopher Newport.
Methodist finished fourth in the six-team meet
with 52 points. Individually, the Monarchs had
two champions. Kawesi Darby won the men’s
55-meter dash in 6.6 seconds, while Husein
Nasiro-Sigo won the men’s 5,000-meter run in a
time of 15:28.95 minutes.

The Methodist track and field teams competed in
the Liberty Record Bash at Liberty on Saturday,
and turned in a few impressive performances. On
the men’s side, Pat Thornell had two top 10
finishes. He placed sixth in the triple jump
with a distance of 12.97 meters and placed
seventh in the high jump with a height of 1.87
meters.

The Matthew Hayes era began in earnest for the
Methodist men’s and women’s indoor track and
field programs as both teams competed in its
first indoor meet of the 2006 at the Liberty
Fast Times Invitational on Saturday. The opening
meet under Hayes, who replaced Halcyon Blake as
Methodist head coach a month ago, proved solid
for Methodist. Headlining the top finishes for
Methodist was Pat Thornell, who excelled in the
field events. He placed sixth in the men’s high
jump with a height of 6-1.5 feet.

Lynchburg assistant brings solid credentials
to Monarch program
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Methodist athletic
director Bob McEvoy announced on Tuesday the
hiring of Matthew Hayes as the new head track
and field/cross country coach at Methodist
College. Hayes, who begins his position on Dec.
15, comes to Methodist after serving as both the
head women’s cross country coach and assistant
men’s cross country and men’s and women’s track
and field coach at Lynchburg. He replaces
Halcyon Blake, who is resigning after
five-and-a-half seasons at Methodist.

Rayford wins individual Most
Valuable Athlete as Methodist men place third at
Mason-Dixon Outdoor Championships
SALISBURY, Md. - Freshman Nevin
Rayford capped off a spectacular freshman track
and field season for the Methodist Monarchs on
Saturday as he won two events to win Most
Valuable Athlete honors for Methodist at the
Mason-Dixon Conference Outdoor Track and Field
Championships at Salisbury. Rayford won both the
men’s long jump with a distance of 22-02.5 feet
and the men’s triple jump in 45-10 feet. He was
one of many standouts that paced the Monarchs to
a third place finish at the meet. Methodist
finished with 128 points, behind Salisbury (177)
and champion Christopher Newport (209.5).

4x400-meter relay team finishes third at 111th
Penn Relays
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. –
Competing in arguably the biggest showcase in
track and field, the Methodist Monarchs finished
third in the men’s 4x400-meter relay in the
College Division over the weekend at the 111th
edition of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field.
The team of Mike Hill, Nevin Rayford, Jackson
Jean and Adonis Stanley finished in a time of
3:30.43 for the third place finish and a Bronze
Medal in the process.

Monarchs place fourth, Lady
Monarchs ninth at Carolinas Championship
PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Methodist
Monarch men’s track and field team garnered a
fourth-place finish, while the Lady Monarchs
finished ninth on Saturday at the 13th annual
Carolinas Championships at UNC-Pembroke.
Methodist garnered 70 points in the men’s
competition, and 14 points in the women’s meet.
Anthony Trofe won the men’s hammer throw with a
distance of 47.68 meters, while Nevin Rayford
finished second in the men’s long jump with a
distance of 6.89 meters. That distance made
Rayford a provisional qualifier for next month’s
NCAA Division III National Championships.

eighth at Chanticlear Classic
CONWAY, S.C. –
The Methodist Monarch men’s track and field team garnered a
fourth place finish on Saturday at the Chanticlear Classic
at Coastal Carolina, while the Lady Monarchs finished
eighth. The Monarchs accumulated 45 points, and the Lady
Monarchs scored two points in the nine-team field.
Headlining the Monarchs was Darmarcus Wilson, who won the
men’s discus with a throw of 157-03 feet. In addition,
DeVonne Armstrong placed second in the men’s shot put with
throw of 48-03.25 feet, and Nevin Rayford placed second in
the men’s triple jump with a distance of 43-0 feet.

Monarchs finish sixth,
Lady Monarchs place ninth at Emory Classic
ATLANTA, Ga. –
Battling both a tough meet field and the elements, the
Methodist Monarch men’s track and field team placed sixth on
Saturday at the Emory Classic, while the Methodist Lady
Monarch women’s track and field team placed ninth. The
Monarchs scored 45 points in the 18-team meet, five points
ahead of Clark-Atlanta and Kennesaw State and seven points
ahead of Clayton State. Cedarville won the men’s
championship with 114.5 points. The Lady Monarchs scored 21
points in the 19-team women’s field, as Cedarville was the
overall champion with 125 points. release

Men’s relays shine
for Methodist at Clemson Relays
CLEMSON, S.C. –
The relay events were the highlights on Saturday for the
Methodist Monarch and Lady Monarch track and field teams at
the Clemson relays. Methodist
finished second in the men’s 4x200-meter relay event as the
team of Jeremy McSwain, Michael Hill, Adonis Stanley and
Jackson recorded a time of 1:28.55. In addition, the Monarch
team of Hill, Jean, McSwain and Taz Petty finished third in
the men’s 4x100-meter relay with a time of 42.23. Finally,
the team of Jean, Hill, Dwayne Johnson and Antony Donaldson
finished seventh in the men’s 4x400-meter relay in 3:43.25. release

Invitational
LEXINGTON, Va. –
The 2005 outdoor portion of the track and field season started
successfully for both the Methodist men’s and women’s
teams on Saturday at the Washington & Lee Invitational.
The Monarchs finished a strong second, while the Lady Monarchs
finished tied for seventh. The
Methodist men finished with 84 points, second only to West
Virginia Wesleyan in the nine-team field. The Lady Monarchs
scored 12 points, the same as Bridgewater in the nine-team

second, Lady Monarchs place fifth at Mason-Dixon Indoor Track
& Field Championships
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –
For the second time in the last three years, Methodist has
proven itself as an elite track and field program in the
Mason-Dixon Conference. At
the Mason-Dixon Indoor Championships on Sunday at Christopher
Newport, the Monarchs finished second out of seven teams
competing, while the Lady Monarchs placed fifth out of seven
teams. The Monarchs had 106 points, second only to host
Christopher Newport with 194. Salisbury finished third,
followed by Frostburg State and Mary Washington. The Lady
Monarchs finished with 22 points, while Christopher Newport
won the meet with 179 points. release

events in day two of Winter Frolic
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –
The Methodist Monarch and Lady Monarch track and field teams
had another strong day at the 2005 Winter Frolic on Saturday
at Christopher Newport. Overall, Methodist won three
individual events on the men’s side. Fresh
off his victory in the 35-pound weight throw on Friday,
DeVonne Armstrong followed that up by winning the shot put on
Saturday with a toss of 48-4.75 feet. release

the 35-pound weight throw for the men, the Monarchs’ DeVonne

for Methodist at UNC Fast Times
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –
DeVonne Armstrong and Meg Coe both shined on Saturday for the
Methodist men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams
as Methodist competed at the UNC Fast Times at North Carolina.
It was the first meet of the 2005 indoor season for Methodist. Armstrong finished second overall
in the men’s shot put with a throw of 14.98 meters, while
Coe finished sixth in the women’s shot put and set a school
record in the process with a toss of 12.28 meters. release
