Monarchs
finish second, Lady Monarchs place fifth at
Mason-Dixon Indoor Track & Field
Championships
NEWPORT NEWS,
Va. – For
the second time in the last three years,
Methodist has proven itself as an elite track
and field program in the Mason-Dixon Conference.
At the
Mason-Dixon Indoor Championships on Sunday at
Christopher Newport, the Monarchs finished
second out of seven teams competing, while the
Lady Monarchs placed fifth out of seven teams.
The Monarchs had 106 points, second only to host
Christopher Newport with 194. Salisbury finished
third, followed by Frostburg State and Mary
Washington. The Lady Monarchs finished with 22
points, while Christopher Newport won the meet
with 179 points.
Individually,
Methodist had three individual champions and 29
All-Conference selections for the men, while the
women had one individual champion and five
All-Conference selections.
For the men,
freshman Nevin Rayford won the long jump with a
distance of 22-11.5 feet, qualifying
provisionally for the NCAA Division III National
Indoor Championships. In addition, DeVonne
Armstrong won the shot put with a throw of
49-5.25 feet, while Taz Petty prevailed in the
55-meter dash in a time of 6.59 seconds.
Other highlights
for the Monarchs included Clifton McKoy
finishing second in the high jump with a height
of 6-4 feet, while Rayford finished second in
the triple jump with a distance of 42-11.5 feet
and Armstrong was second in the weight throw
with a distance of 49-2.5 feet. Mike Hill
finished third in both the long jump (21-0 feet)
and the 200-meter dash (23.32), while Adonis
Stanley finished third in the 55-meter dash in
6.67 seconds. McKoy also had a third place
finish in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.89 seconds.
In addition,
Jackson Jean garnered fourth place finishes in
both the 200-meter dash and the high jump, while
Brad Woods finished fourth in the long jump and
the 55-meter dash.
For the women,
Meg Coe won the shot put with a throw of 39-11
feet, while Chemier Buford finished third with a
distance of 37-5.25 feet. Jessica
Adams-Alexander finished fourth in the long jump
(15-11 feet) and sixth in the 55-meter dash
(6.95), while Christina Gipson placed sixth in
the 400-meter dash in 1.09.
