Track and Field Competes in First Outdoor Meet of the Season
Sophomore Pat Thornell wins javelin throw as one of six first place finishes for the Monarchs

PEMBROKE, NC-  The Monarchs' track and field team opened the 2007 outdoor season participating in the Braves Track and Field Classic at the University of North Carolina Pembroke on Saturday.  The Monarchs registered six first place finishes during the day.

For the women, junior Chelsale Hester placed sixth in the 100m with a time of 13.84 while junior Krystal Patton ran the 3000m in 12:09.82 to place fifth in the race.  Seniors LaToya Robertson and Ebony Bedford placed eighth and twelfth respectively in the shot put.

The men's team competed well against Pembroke, Shaw University and Fayetteville State earning five individual wins as well as a first place finish in the 4x100 meter relay.  Freshman Cedric McGill was just one hundredth of a second off the lead placing second in the 100m with a time of 11.43.  Junior Mike Hill won the 200m dash in a time of 22.66 seconds and sophomore Antwin Shuford ran a 50.83 to win the 400m race. 

McGill, Hill, sophomore Tazz Petty and junior Nevin Rayford combined to win the 4x100m relay in a time of 43.69 while freshman Brandon Kidd, Shuford, Hill, and freshman Adam Clouse placed third in the 4x400m relay.  Rayford placed fourth in the long jump but took first in the triple jump with a leap of 45-09.75 feet.  Sophomore Pat Thornell was third in the triple and won the javelin throw with a throw of 169-04.  Freshman Carlton Wellington won the men's discus throw with a distance of 40.31 meters.

The team will compete at the Emory Classic on March 24th.
