August 30, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Head coach Eddie Matthews welcomed the volleyball team back to campus earlier this month intent on using last year’s experience to create greater success this season. Eight players return from a 15-17 season in 2006. The team adds three freshmen to the mix this fall. Last year, the team had a wealth of newcomers attempting to transition to the college game. With seven sophomores on the 2007 roster, Matthews recognizes “this year has been a much smoother transition and our practices have reflected it. It’s not necessarily what to do, but how to do it.” A USA South All-Conference Honorable Mention last season, junior Sara Yeatman returns for her third season. Matthews will rely on her leadership returning as a second-year team captain. “She isn’t a yeller, but she has that take care of business attitude,” said Matthews. Yeatman contributed right away as a freshman and was integral last year. Opposing teams will be focusing on her which should challenge the outside hitter to continue to improve. “Each and every one of the sophomores will contribute this season,” said Matthews. Tiffany Zellhart will be the main setter for the Monarchs. She will have to be another leader on the court while she controls the action. Jordan Grady took on a vital role as the libero during her rookie campaign and did extremely well. She will look to build on her development this season. Matthews foresees Laura Gilbert having increased responsibility both on and off the court this season as the middle blocker. Allison Averitt, Kelsey Carter, Taylor Cates, and Kelly Shipkowski have all developed as hitters from a year ago and will look to be factors this year. Maggie Gaines is a very good athlete and looks to work into the mix as a freshman. “Her athleticism is allowing her to do things other volleyball players can’t,” added Matthews. Freshman Angie Paz comes to Methodist having played at a high level in the past. “She brings maturity to the team and her background lends itself well to the team,” said Matthews. Jennie Price completes the Monarchs’ roster as the third freshman. As all of the players look to progress into college student-athletes, Matthews noted, “Jennie has improved immeasurably throughout the preseason.” The team will open the 2007 season hosting McMurry and Spelman Friday, Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sept. 1 on the Methodist campus. “I am excited about getting the season rolling,” said Matthews. “It’s a great way to kick off and use as a barometer for the season.” The Monarchs compete as members of the USA South Athletic Conference and were picked fifth in the preseason poll. Matthews knows Christopher Newport, Averett and Greensboro will continue to dominate the top third of the standings, and looks forward to starting the action this fall. The Monarchs
will face McMurray on Friday at 7 pm. |
