October 3, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Methodist volleyball team came back from a two game deficit to force a fifth game, but Greensboro jumped to an early lead in game five before securing the 2-3 (29-31, 31-33, 30-21, 30-25, 8-15) win. Methodist moves to 11-10 overall and 6-6 in the USA South while Greensboro is 13-8 overall and 9-3 in the conference. Greensboro took a 17-10 lead to start game one, but the Monarchs settled in and started making up points. A kill from sophomore Allison Averitt tied the game at 29, but the Pride finished things off with the final points to win game one. The second game featured 13 ties with both teams exchanging points. Greensboro had game point at 29-28, but a Pride attack error forced another tie. Greensboro took the 30-29 lead, but freshman Maggie Gaines earned the kill to the game back at 30. The teams exchanged points again before Greensboro's Michelle Gabson drove home the final two kills to win game two 33-31. In game three, the Monarchs came out strong early and took an 18-9 lead and rolled through to the 30-21 win. Methodist led early in game four as well, but the Pride kept trying to come back to earn the win. Greensboro came within two points, but the Monarchs surged forward to the 30-25 win, forcing the fifth game. Greensboro served first in game five and earned the first point before a service error tied the game at one. Averitt gave Methodist a 2-1 lead, but the Pride went on a 9-4 run to take the lead. Greensboro's Bridget McCaskill finished the match with two straight service aces for the 15-8 win. Junior Sara Yeatman led Methodist with 21 kills while sophomore Laura Gilbert finishd with 12. Sophomore Tiffany Zellhart had 40 assists to go along with 14 digs and five kills. Sophomore libero Jordan Grady led with 27 digs. The Monarchs will head to Georgia this weekend. The team is at Agnes Scott Friday at 5 pm. |
