The
Methodist University volleyball program looks to use the
momentum of its run to the 2001 Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Tournament Championship match, 2002 DIAC semifinals, and
the first winning season since 1992 in 2005 to propel the program to
future success. The 2001 campaign was a fresh start for the Monarch Volleyball program as Eddie Matthews took over the reins as the head coach after a five-year tenure as the head coach at NCAA Division I Georgia Southern. After finishing the 2001 regular season by winning four of its final five matches, the sixth-seeded Lady Monarchs used a pair of upsets over traditional volleyball powers Greensboro (third seed) and Averett (second seed) to reach the tournament finals. In 2002, Methodist won the most matches in a season (16) since 1993, and eclipsed that mark in 2005 with the first winning season (17-13) and most victories in a season since 1992. With Matthews directing traffic from the sidelines and a strong returning corps, the Monarchs are poised to make their permanent move towards the top of the USA South Athletic Conference. The volleyball history at Methodist includes a conference regular season championship (1988), two conference tournament championships (1986, 1988) and one NCAA Division III National Tournament appearance (1988). |
