August 31, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs started their season Friday night in a match against the visiting Indians from McMurry University. McMurry took on Spelman in the first match of the night and defeated the Jaguars 3-0. The Indians kept their winning ways knocking off Methodist 0-3 (20-30, 17-30, 22-30) as well. Both teams traded points early in the first game before McMurry took a 13-5 lead. The Monarchs battled back at one point closing the gap to 16-14 after a kill by junior Sara Yeatman on the assist from sophomore Kelsey Carter. McMurry went on to take the win. In game two, the Indians jumped out early and the Monarchs worked to score points. Sophomore Allison Averitt registered a kill and a block while sophomore Taylor Cates scored two kills and an ace. Grady kept the Monarchs in contention with two aces late in the game, but McMurry held on to take game two and a 2-0 lead. McMurry took another 7-1 lead in the third game, but the Monarchs slowly chipped away at the score. Sophomore Tiffany Zellhart entered the game and set up sophomore Kelsey Carter for the kill to put the Monarchs within striking distance. Kills by Cates and Averitt along with an ace from Averitt closed the deficit to 15-26. The Monarchs then went on a 7-1 rally, but McMurry regained control and finished with the win. Grady finished with 10 digs for the Monarchs while Yeatman and sophomore Laura Gilbert both had four kills a piece. Carter tallied 15 assists on the night.
