Volleyball Wins Two on Saturday
Junior Sara Yeatman registers 54 kills in three matches

FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Methodist battled through five games with Spelman to win their first match of the season Saturday morning 3-2 (27-30, 30-25, 28-30, 30-17, 15-5). McMurry took the second match 0-3 (23-30, 19-30, 25-30) before the Monarchs swept Spelman 3-0 (30-27, 30-17, 30-21) in the final match of the day.

In the opener against Spelman, the Monarchs held an early lead in game one before Spelman closed on a 5-0 rally to win 30-27. The Monarchs recovered to take game two behind seven kills from sophomore Sara Yeatman. Spelman won game three before the Monarchs tied the match at 2-2 with a win in game four. The team took the momentum from game four to close out the match with the 15-5 win in game five. Yeatman finished the match with 25 kills while sophomore Kelsey Carter added 36 assists with 15 digs.

McMurry prevailed in the second match, but the Monarchs' improvement overnight was noticeable from the start. In game one, the score was tied at 15 and the Methodist was still within two at 20-22 before McMurry closed things out with the 30-23 win. The second game had the Monarchs within striking distance again early before the Indians took the 2-0 lead. McMurry took a 17-9 lead midway through the third game before the Monarchs battled back behind the serving of sophomore Tiffany Zellhart. A kill from sophomore Taylor Cates moved the Monarchs to within three at 24-27, but McMurry pulled out the sweep to win 30-25. Yeatman led with 15 kills while Zellhart had 23 assists.

During the final match of the day, Methodist opted not to prolong the inevitable with the 3-0 sweep. Spelman kept it close in the first game, but the Monarchs built a cushion in game two with seven aces to go onto the 30-17 win. The Monarchs jumped to an early lead and was within game point at 29-16 before the Jaguars made a final push, but Methodist capped off the day with a kill from sophomore Laura Gilbert. Yeatman added 14 kills while sophomore Allison Averitt hit .500 percent with 11 kills in the match. Zellhart had 25 assists and sophomore Jordan Grady tallied six digs.

The team will compete in the Roanoke Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
