September 21, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Monarchs fell to Christopher Newport 0-3 (14-30, 16-30, 25-30) but came back to defeat Ferrum 3-1 (30-26, 30-17, 18-30, 30-23). With the split, Methodist wins 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the USA South. Methodist was in game one early against Christopher Newport, but the Captains came on strong to put it away. Christopher Newport jumped out early in game two and the Monarchs couldn't recover. In game three, the Monarchs closed the lead to 23-25 with a kill by junior Sara Yeatman, but the Captains went on to win 30-25. Yeatman finished with 12 kills while sophomore Tiffany Zellhart had 21 assists. Sophomore Jordan Grady registered 16 digs while sophomore Taylor Cates added 11. In the second match of the day, the Monarchs took on Ferrum College. In game one, sophomore Kelsey Carter served three points to give the Monarchs an 8-7 lead and the Monarchs held on to the lead for a 30-26 win. Methodist never even trailed in game two as they cruised to a 30-17 win. Ferrum came out firing in game three and battled back to win 30-18. The Monarchs had to come from behind in game four which featured nine ties. It was a seesaw between the two teams, but Methodist prevailed 30-23 to earn their third conference win. Yeatman tallied 18 digs while Cates had 11. Zellhart dished out 42 assists and 20 digs while Grady had 16 digs. Carter finished with seven aces on the night. The Monarchs will travel to Peace on Saturday to face Mary Baldwin at 2:30 pm and Peace at 5 pm.. |
