October 20, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - With the regular season wrapping up this week, the Methodist volleyball team is still fighting for a chance to host the first round of the USA South Conference Tournament. The team hosted a Tri-Match today beginning with a 3-0 (30-25, 30-27, 30-22) win over Shenandoah. In the final match of the day, Methodist lost to Averett 0-3 (18-30, 20-30, 28-30). The Monarchs move to 15-13 overall this season and 8-7 in the USA South. In the first match, the Monarchs took an early lead and held on for the 30-25 win. The Hornets battled in game two, but Methodist won 30-27 and the Monarchs finished the sweep with a 30-22 win in game three. Junior Sara Yeatman led Methodist with 19 kills and 14 digs while sophomore Allison Averitt had 14 kills in the match. Sophomore Tiffany Zellhart finished with 46 assists while sophomores Jordan Grady and Taylor Cates each had 13 digs. Averett defeated Shenandoah in the second match 3-0 and finished with a 3-0 win over Methodist as well. Averett cruised to wins in games one and two, but the Monarchs made it a battle in game three. Neither team could get a rally with the largest advantage coming in at just three points during the game. The Monarchs tied the game at 28, but Averett put away two kills for the final points in the match. Averitt led with seven kills while Yeatman added six. Grady had 15 digs and Yeatman had 13. Zellhart added 26 assists. Methodist will host their final regular season home match on Tuesday against N.C. Wesleyan at 7 pm. |
