December 2, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Both teams pressed hard on defense keeping the score low, but Methodist prevailed 58-46 over Agnes Scott Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs improve to 4-1 on the season while Agnes Scott falls to 2-3. Methodist took an early 8-2 lead after a 3-pointer by junior Zan Messer three minutes into the game. The Scotties kept plugging away and were only down by four with less than five minutes remaining in the half. With 1:07 to go, junior Amanda Underwood hit two free throws to give Methodist a seven point lead, but Agnes Scott's Evan Joslin hit the second of two free throws to close the gap to six at halftime. The Scotties came out strong in the second half and tied the game at 29 with 13:46 on the clock. The game was tied again at 34 with less than ten minutes to go, but the Monarchs began to pull away going on an 8-0 run. Agnes Scott's Laura Coleman scored on a layup, but Underwood countered with the 3-pointer followed up by two free throws from junior Kristen Whitehurst for the 11 point lead. The final five minutes were laden with fouls, but Methodist shot 17-for-25 from the free throw line in the second half to preserve the 58-46 win. Senior Chelsale Hester led the team with 12 points to go along with six rebounds. Underwood scored nine and senior Courtney Bissette added eight points. Whitehurst finished with ten rebounds for Methodist. Methodist will travel to Oglethorpe on Dec. 15 to play at 2 pm. |
