Monarchs Win 59-48 Over Averett
Senior Chelsale Hester recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Monarchs won their second straight on Tuesday night in a come from behind victory over Averett. Methodist improves to 8-4 this season and 4-1 in the USA South while Averett drops to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Methodist scored the first basket of the game, but Averett responded with 13-4 run to take a seven point lead with 9:51 remaining in the half. With the Cougars still leading by seven in the final five minutes, freshman Adriana Wilson scored a layup and junior Kristen Whitehurst finished on two layups. Whitehurst finished the 3-point play with a made free throw to tie the game at 15 with 3:01 left on the clock. Averett took a 19-17 lead, but senior Chelsale Hester tied the game on a put-back off the rebound to tie the game at halftime.

Both teams kept it tight early in the second half before the Monarchs began to pull away. Freshman Dawn Sanderson scored four consecutive points and senior Ashley Harris hit a layup and the first of two free throws to take a 42-34 lead midway through the half. Play was sloppy with six turnovers in the course of a minute of a half before Methodist junior Zan Messer drained a 3-pointer. The Monarchs led by as many as 15 during the game with Averett finishing on free throws to close the gap to 11. Methodist maintained their lead to win 59-48.

Hester led Methodist with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Harris scored nine points. Whitehurst and Messer each added eight.

Methodist will travel to Peace on Thursday for a 7 pm tipoff.
