February 12, 2008 DANVILLE, VA- Averett hung out with Methodist early, but the Monarchs started to pull away in the first half before finishing with the 61-43 victory. Methodist improves to 15-5 overall and 11-2 in the USA South while Averett is 8-13 overall and 6-8 this season. Methodist won the tip and junior Dezzire Gilliard scored the first basket of the game for Methodist, but Averett exchanged baskets through the first few minutes. The Cougars led by one through the first five minutes, but junior Amanda Underwood hit a jumper to give Methodist the 9-8 lead with 12:54 to go in the half and the Monarchs never looked back. Senior Ashley Harris scored in the final minute to give Methodist an eight point lead at halftime. The Monarchs scored the first eight points of the second half and went on to lead by as many as 26. The team limited Averett's second chance points thanks in part to senior Chelsale Hester's 11 defensive rebounds. Methodist closed out the game with the 61-43 win. Hester led the team in scoring with 16 points and finished with 16 rebounds. Gilliard added nine points while Underwood finished with seven. Methodist will host Peace on Thursday at 7 pm as part of their Think Pink celebration.
