Methodist Falls to Christopher Newport
Junior Dezzire Gilliard led the team in scoring with 17 points

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Christopher Newport used a late run in the first half to take the lead and never trailed again as they defeated the Monarchs 71-63 on Saturday. Methodist moves to 11-5 this season and 7-2 in the USA South while Christopher Newport is now 11-4 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

The first half was back and forth with both teams exchanging baskets and neither team leading by more than four until the final minutes. Christopher Newport tied the game at 25 with 3:45 remaining and closed out the half on an 11-3 run to take an eight point lead into the locker room at halftime.

Methodist came out strong in the second half scoring the first six points, but the Captains responded by taking a 14 point lead with 11 minutes to go in the game. Methodist closed in on Christopher Newport and started to chip away at the lead. With three minutes left, junior Kristen Whitehurst converted both free throws to move Methodist within one. Christopher Newport hit a jumper on the other end before junior Dezzire Gilliard was able to grab an offensive rebound on the other end and feed Whitehurst for another one point deficit with just 1:31 on the clock. The Captains scored again and with 36 seconds left and down by three, the Monarchs were fouled sending Christopher Newport to the free throw line. The Captains finished 6-for-6 from the free throw line to take the 71-63 win.

Gilliard led the Monarchs with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Whitehurst added 13 points including a 7-for-7 performance from the free throw line.

Methodist will continue their road trip tomorrow at Shenandoah at 2 pm.
