February 16, 2007 NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Lady Monarchs only shot 9-for-29 in the first half as Christopher Newport went on to defeat Methodist 63-48. Methodist falls to 13-11 overall and 7-6 in the USA South while Christopher Newport moves to 16-8 this season and 10-3 in the conference. The Captains started on a 9-0 run and led by as many as 13 in the first half. Methodist closed the lead to two on free throws by senior Antionett Holliday with 8:46 remaining in the half, but the Captains went on to extend their lead. Christopher Newport held a 32-24 lead at halftime. The Lady Monarchs closed the lead to four early in the second half, but Christopher Newport ran away with it during the final fifteen minutes. Methodist struggled to maintain possession, committing 29 turnovers compared to the Captains' 14. Junior Ashley Harris led the Lady Monarchs with 17 points while Holliday finished with 13 points and led with 7 rebounds. Methodist will travel to Shenandoah to face the Hornets on Saturday at 2 pm. The Lady Monarchs need a win to have a chance at fourth place in the conference. The top four seeds will host a USA South Quarterfinal on Tuesday. |
