Lady Monarchs fall 119-94 at Emory & Henry in 2005-06 season opener
Jackson, Harris record career-highs in points

EMORY, Va. – The 2005-06 women’s basketball season opened with a bang (literally) for the Methodist Lady Monarchs on Friday. Playing at the Emory & Henry Tip-Off Classic, the Lady Monarchs dropped a 119-94 track meet to host Emory & Henry at the King Center.

Despite the defeat, it was the most points in a game for the Lady Monarchs since scoring 105 points against Peace in the 1999-00 season. In addition, Methodist shot 49 percent from the field, and out-rebounded the Wasps 53-48. The difference was on the perimeter, where Emory & Henry had a whopping 45 3-point attempts to only three for the Lady Monarchs.

Individually, it was a banner night for Methodist sophomores Lisa Jackson and Ashley Harris as they both recorded career highs in both points and rebounds. Jackson recorded her first career double-double with a game-high 30 points and 11 rebounds, while Harris scored a career-high 25 points and equaled her career-high in rebounds with seven.

With its run-and-gun attack, Emory & Henry jumped out to an early 11-point lead at 21-10 with 13:11 remaining. However, Methodist went on the offensive with a 10-2 run to trim the deficit to 23-20 on Ann Forsberg’s jumper with 11:39 remaining. Emory & Henry increased its lead back to 19 points at the 4:37 mark on a 3-point basket by Klyett Brown.

But a late charge by the Lady Monarchs trimmed the Wasp lead to nine points at halftime. Trailing by 18 points, Jackson poured in 11 points in the final three minutes of the half as part of a 14-3 Methodist run.

Jackson’s two free throws at the 17:20 mark of the second half trimmed the Emory & Henry lead to 69-61. But the Wasps answered with a 13-0 run, capped off by Katie Klik’s 3-point basket at the 15:47 mark to give Emory & Henry an 82-69 lead. The closest that Methodist was able to trim the deficit was 14 points, 104-90 on a Jackson jump shot with 4:31 remaining.

In addition to Jackson and Harris, junior forward Stacy Williams scored 10 points for the Lady Monarchs. Lauren Habel and Miranda Carrasco each scored 19 points for Emory & Henry as eight Wasps reached double-figures. Kate Childress scored 17 points, followed by Brown with 16 points, Becca Thompson and Katherine Brandt each with 12 points and Whitney Henderson added 11 points.

Methodist plays Lynchburg on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Emory & Henry Tip-Off Classic.
