February 9, 2008 FERRUM, VA- Things started slow for the Methodist women's basketball team on Saturday, but things started coming together as they overcame a 12 point deficit to earn the 71-60 win over Ferrum College. Both teams are now at the top of the USA South standings with 10-2 conference records while Methodist does hold the edge in head-to-head competition over Ferrum. Methodist is 14-5 overall this season while Ferrum stands at 12-7. Ferrum scored the first nine points of the game and the Monarchs found themselves struggling early. Senior Courtney Bissette got the team on the board with a layup four minutes into play, but Ferrum took their largest lead at 11:44 on two free throws by Candice Jackson. Methodist senior Ashley Harris hit two free throws on the other end and the Monarchs started to put a dent in the lead. With a few minutes to go in the half, junior Dezzire Gilliard hit a jumper to give Methodist the lead by one. They didn't stop there as they went on to take a 34-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the second half, Methodist picked up where they left off extending their lead to 17 on a layup by junior Amanda Underwood. Ferrum hit their free throws and found a couple of 3-pointers but Bissette responded with two 3-pointers of her own in the final five minutes of the game. Methodist maintained their composure as they cruised to the 71-60 win. Underwood was crucial in the post position scoring 16 points for Methodist tied for the team high with Harris. Bissette finished with her first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The team out rebounded Ferrum 52-40. Methodist will play at Averett on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
