Greensboro rallies late, edges Lady Monarchs 61-56
Jackson scores 17 points in USA South defeat for Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Over the past few seasons, Methodist and Greensboro have dueled out in some epic battles in women’s basketball, and Wednesday night was no different. The visiting Pride, however, pulled out a late rally and edged Methodist 61-56 in USA South Athletic Conference action at the Riddle Center.

The defeat drops Methodist to an even 9-9 on the season and 4-4 in the USA South, while Greensboro remains in first place in the USA South.

There were nine lead-changes alone in the second half and four ties between the two teams. A lay-up in transition by Mary Porter gave the Pride an eight-point lead, 46-38 with 9:37 remaining in the game. However, Methodist rallied with a 9-0 run to take the lead.

Lisa Jackson started the run with a 3-point play, followed by a lay-up by Geya Norwood-Shaw to trim the Greensboro lead to 46-45 at the 7:46 mark. The Lady Monarchs then took a 47-46 lead on Antionett Holliday’s lay-up with 6:32 remaining.

Methodist increased the lead to four points on a 3-point play by Ann Forsberg, only to have Greensboro re-take the lead on Sirlena Moore’s 3-point basket with 3:41 remaining. Jackson put Methodist back out in front with a jump shot at the 2:41 mark, but that would be Methodist’s last field goal.

Greensboro went ahead for good 57-56 on Staci Humphrey’s lay-up with 2:14 remaining. Humphrey’s two free throws with 11 seconds remaining sealed it for the Pride.

Jackson paced Methodist with 17 points, while Forsberg scored nine points off the bench and Holliday added eight points. Holliday and Stacy Williams each grabbed 11 rebounds as Methodist out-rebounded Greensboro 57-36. The Lady Monarchs, however, shot only 1-for-20 (five percent) from 3-point range, and 9-for-20 from the free throw line.

For the Pride (13-6, 7-1), Moore recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Humphrey also scored 14 points. Porter and Jamie Motsinger each added eight points.
