Methodist women rebound, knock off Lynchburg 66-60
Jackson records second straight double-double

EMORY, Va. – Following Friday’s high-octane defeat against Emory & Henry, the Methodist Lady Monarch women’s basketball slowed down the pace a little on Saturday with its first victory of the 2005-06 season. The Lady Monarchs knocked off Lynchburg 66-60 at the Emory & Henry Tip-Off Classic at the King Center.

The victory evens Methodist’s record at 1-1 overall.

For the second straight game, Lisa Jackson was the catalyst for Methodist. After a 30-point, 11-rebound performance against Emory & Henry, the sophomore guard followed with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double. In addition, Jackson also recorded five steals and the Lady Monarchs forced 28 Lynchburg turnovers.

The game was as back-and-forth as possible. There were 10 lead changes, including seven in the first half before Lynchburg took a 31-28 lead at halftime on a jump shot by Whitney Dix. The Lady Hornets extended their lead to seven points, 47-40 on consecutive baskets by Dix and Caroline Wesley with 13:32 remaining.

However, Methodist took control with a 15-2 run over the next five minutes.

The Lady Monarchs tied the game 47-47 at the 11:10 mark on a basket by Stacy Williams, and then took the lead for good when freshman Kristen Whitehurst scored on consecutive baskets to give Methodist a 51-47 lead. Jackson’s two free throws with 7:52 remaining increased the Lady Monarch lead to 55-48.

Lynchburg trimmed the Methodist lead to one point, 57-56 on Lacey Currie’s 3-point play with 2:52 remaining. But the Lady Monarchs responded as Whitehurst answered with a basket in the paint, and then Jackson scored the next five Methodist points to seal the game.

Whitehurst scored 15 points with eight rebounds off the bench for Methodist, while Antionett Holliday scored 12 points and Williams added 10 points for the Lady Monarchs. Currie and Lori Fletcher each scored 13 points for Lynchburg (0-2), followed by Erika Seay with 12 points and Wesley added 10 points.

Methodist travels Tuesday to Bennett for a 6 p.m. tip off.
