Senior Stacy Williams leads the team with 19 points

FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Lady Monarchs held a 12 point lead with eight minutes remaining in the second half, but the Fighting Squirrels came back to defeat Methodist 62-57.  Methodist moves to 12-10 overall while Mary Baldwin moves to 8-14.

Methodist took an early eight point lead with 12:52 to go in the first half before the Squirrels went on a 15-0 run to hold a seven point lead with less than seven minutes remaining.  Senior Stacy Williams tied the game at 26 on a jumper, but Mary Baldwin regained control to take a 33-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Monarchs came out strong with a run of their own to build an eight point lead with 12:02 to go in the game.  The Squirrels responded with a layup by Kara Hawkins, but sophomore Amanda Underwood countered with a fast break layup on the assist from freshman Michaela Myers.  A layup by junior Chelsale Hester extended the lead to 12 with 8:11 remaining, but the Squirrels slowly began to chip away at the lead.  Jessica Carter hit a three-pointer for Mary Baldwin to take a one point lead with 55 seconds remaining.  The Squirrels stole the ball and Carter drove in for the layup to take a three point lead.  Sophomore Zan Messer was fouled and closed the gap to one after sinking both of her free throws.  Methodist fouled Mary Baldwin to send Lindsay Callison to the free throw line who hit both free throws to hold a 60-57 lead.  The Lady Monarchs called the timeout to set up the play with nine seconds to go, but a turnover forced the team to foul sending Carter to the line to finish the game with the 62-57.

Williams led Methodist with 19 points while Messer added 9 and junior Ashley Harris had eight.  Senior Antionett Holliday led the team with 8 rebounds.

Methodist will play their final regular season home game on Monday against NC Wesleyan at 5:30 pm.
