Monarchs Fall to Mary Baldwin
Junior Amanda Underwood led Methodist with 12 points

STAUNTON, VA - Mary Baldwin staged a late second half comeback to upset the Methodist women's basketball team Saturday afternoon 65-62. Methodist moves to 16-6 overall and 12-3 in the USA South while Mary Baldwin moves to 8-12 overall and 5-9 in the conference.

Methodist junior Dezzire Gilliard got the Monarchs on the board with a jumper 45 seconds into the game and Mary Baldwin just could not keep up. Methodist led by 10 through the first eight minutes of play and junior Zan Messer hit a 3-pointer with five seconds to go in the half to give Methodist a 41-32 lead at halftime.

The Fighting Squirrels came out strong in the second half on a 14-2 run to take a three point lead. Methodist junior Amanda Underwood tied the game on a 3-pointer, but Mary Baldwin's Jennifer Dobson hit her first of two free throws for a one point advantage. Messer fed senior Chelsale Hester for Methodist to regain the lead. The Monarchs extended their lead back to six points with 6:45 to go in the game, but Mary Baldwin was not finished yet. Methodist led by four with two minutes to go and the Squirrels hit a 3-pointer with 1:33 on the clock. The Monarchs' own 3-pointers missed the mark and Mary Baldwin took the lead on a jumper from Lindsay Callison. Methodist missed another shot opportunity and down by one, were forced to foul with three seconds to go. Jennifer Dobson hit both free throws to give Mary Baldwin the 65-62 win.

Underwood led Methodist with 12 points while senior Ashley Harris added 10. Gilliard led the team with 11 rebounds.

Methodist will travel to N.C. Wesleyan on Monday for a 5:30 pm tipoff.
