February 26, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Mary Baldwin hung with the Monarchs early, but Methodist pulled away late to win 77-57 and advance to the USA South Conference Tournament semifinals in Newport News, Va. Christopher Newport defeated Averett to host the Monarchs. Methodist moves to 19-7 this season while Mary Baldwin finishes at 11-14. It took more than two minutes for either team to score and it was the Squirrels who got on the board first with a jumper from Jessica Carter. Methodist senior Ashley Harris countered on the other end with a fast break layup. It was back and forth early before Methodist took a 20-12 lead on a 3-pointer from senior Courtney Bissette with 8:40 to go in the half. Mary Baldwin closed in on the Monarchs and took a brief three point lead before junior Dezzire Gilliard hit a jumper and finished on the free throw for the three point play and tied the game at 27. Harris gave Methodist a two point lead before the Squirrels hit a free throw to close the lead to one with 26 seconds on the clock. Junior Amanda Underwood drained a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left to give the Monarchs a 32-28 lead at halftime. Senior Chelsale Hester gave Methodist a six point lead right away, but Mary Baldwin moved within one with 16:44 remaining in the game. The Monarchs went on a 10-2 run topped off by a jumper from Hester for a 50-40 lead midway through the half. The Squirrels ran into foul trouble and the Monarchs ran away with the game stretching the lead to 22 in the final minute on free throws from sophomore Michaela Myers. Methodist finished with the 77-57 win. Gilliard led the team with 13 points and nine rebounds while junior Ann Forsberg scored 11 points and Hester added 10. Freshman Dawn Sanderson finished with seven rebounds on the night. Methodist will travel to Christopher Newport on Friday to take on the Captains at 6 pm.
