January 15, 2008 RALEIGH, NC - The Monarchs trailed early but took the lead for good just seven minutes into the game and held off a late surge from Meredith to win 71-63 Monday night. Methodist moves to 6-3 this season and 2-0 in the USA South while Meredith drops to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Junior Kristen Whitehurst scored eight points in less than three minutes early in the first half to set the tone for Methodist. Meredith came out strong scoring first leading by as many as five. Whitehurst scored the next eight points for the Monarchs around just one Meredith basket giving Methodist the 10-9 lead. The Monarchs would never trail again. With seven minutes to go in the half a jumper from senior Ashley Harris put Methodist up 25-15 and the they would go on to take a seven point lead into the locker room at halftime. The Avenging Angels cut the lead to just three points early in the second half, but Methodist responded and with just 2:44 on the clock, Harris put the Monarchs up by 14. Meredith finished strong getting the rebounds to create opportunities, but when Whitehurst and junior Zan Messer were fouled in the final minute both players went 2-for-2 from the free throw line to ensure the Monarchs' win. The Monarchs were out rebounded 33-30, but held their turnover total to a season-low of just eight. Whitehurst led the team in scoring with 22 points while Harris finished with 10. Junior Ann Forsberg scored eight points and led the team with six rebounds. Methodist will travel to Greensboro on Wednesday for a 5:30 game. Photo courtesy of William Thomas |
