Lady Monarchs Defeat NC Wesleyan 57-52
Sophomore Kristen Whitehurst leads Methodist with 19 points

ROCKY MOUNT, NC- The women's basketball team won their fourth straight game on Monday when they took on North Carolina Wesleyan in Rocky Mount.  Neither team led by more than 8 during the game with the Monarchs finishing free throws in the closing minutes to maintain the lead and get the win.  Methodist improves to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the USA South while NC Wesleyan falls to 4-9 this season and 1-4 in the conference.

The Bishops took an early lead in the first half when they were up by 7 with less than five minutes remaining in the half.  Methodist went on a 11-3 run to take a one point lead into the locker room at halftime.  Sophomore Kristen Whitehurst was fouled early in the second half and hit both free throws, before she came back down and scored a layup on the next possession to score four consecutive points.  Junior Ashley Harris hit two free throws for the Monarchs and April Wilson countered with two of her own for the Bishops before Whitehurst scored two more layups to give Methodist seven point lead.  NC Wesleyan would not let the Monarchs run away with it and kept battling back.

Methodist still held a two point lead with a minute remaining in the game when NC Wesleyan turned the ball over and was forced to foul with 19 seconds left.  Sophomore Zan Messer hit her first free throw to give the team a three point cushion.  The Bishops grabbed the rebound on the second attempt but a three point was off when junior Courtney Bissette pulled in the rebound and was fouled.  Bissette converted both free throws to give the Monarchs the 57-52 win.

Whitehurst finished with 19 points while senior Stacy Williams added 12 points and 8 rebounds.  Bissette scored 7 points to go along with 7 rebounds.

Methodist will travel to Meredith on Thursday to play at 7 pm.  Methodist won the first contest this season 75-65 in Fayetteville.
