February 18, 2008 ROCKY MOUNT, NC - After letting one slip away on Saturday, the Methodist women's basketball team bounced back with a 63-45 win over N.C. Wesleyan Monday night. Methodist improves to 17-6 overall and 13-3 in the USA South while N.C. Wesleyan drops to 7-15 overall and 4-12 in the conference. The Bishops scored the first three points, but Methodist went on a 14-2 run to gain a nine point lead through the first nine and a half minutes. N.C. Wesleyan climbed back to within three, but Methodist responded with an offensive rebound and layup from senior Chelsale Hester. Junior Zan Messer pushed the lead to 10 with nine seconds left on a free throw, but N.C. Wesleyan hit their own free throw to make the score 29-20 at halftime. The Monarchs did not let up in the second half with junior Ann Forsberg's jumper extending the lead to 18 points. With just over three minutes to go, Hester scored back-to-back baskets to give Methodist a 21 point lead. N.C. Wesleyan scored on the other end, but senior Ashley Harris' two free throws gave Methodist their largest lead at 22. The Monarchs went on to win 63-45 over the Bishops. Hester led the team with 14 points and seven rebounds while Harris added 11 points. Methodist will host their final regular season home games on Friday against Shenandoah at 5:30 pm and Saturday against Christopher Newport at 2 pm. Photo courtesy of William Thomas |
